Oklahomans Give the Gift of Life to More People than Ever Before
LifeShare Saves 518 Lives Through Organ Donation Last Year
LifeShare of Oklahoma is proud to announce its eighth consecutive record-breaking year in the number of organ donors, number of organs transplanted, number of tissue donors and number of lives saved.
LifeShare is the federally designated organ procurement organization in the state of Oklahoma and is responsible for organ and tissue donation statewide.
In 2021, LifeShare recovered 584 organs from 233 organ donors, which saved the lives of 518 people waiting for a second chance at life. All of these achievements represent record levels for the organization, surpassing 2020’s record of 214 organ donors and 508 lives saved, and 2018’s record of 542 organs transplanted.
The organization partnered with Oklahoma’s hospitals and transplant centers as well as transplant centers across the nation to achieve this number of donations and transplants. In 2021, LifeShare was again among the nation’s top performing organ procurement organizations.
“We are proud that despite the continued challenges of the pandemic, LifeShare had another record-breaking year thanks to our hospital partners, volunteers, and our passionate staff who diligently work to save lives,” Jeffrey Orlowski, President and Chief Executive Officer of LifeShare said. “However, none of this would have been possible without the generosity of our donor families who look beyond their own grief to save the lives of others.”
Last year, LifeShare also recovered life enhancing tissue from 1,094 donors. This represents another record year for tissue donation in the state of Oklahoma. The generous gifts of tissue could impact more than 82,000 people through bone donations to improve mobility, skin donations to heal burn patients, cornea donations to restore sight and heart valve donations to repair life-threatening defects.
“Our success in 2021 will carry us confidently as we continue to impact Oklahoma through the powerful gift of donation,” Orlowski said. “Today, more than 600 Oklahomans await the gift of life through organ donation and countless others wait for tissue donations.”
LifeShare encourages all Oklahomans to register as an organ, eye and tissue donor and to share your decision with your family. You can give the gift of life by registering to be a donor at www.LifeShareRegistry.org.
