Life-Saving Automated Referral Program Transforms Organ Donation for Oklahomans
Oklahoma City, OK (Oct. 3, 2024) – For those awaiting a life-saving organ, eye or tissue transplant, every second counts. LifeShare Network has introduced groundbreaking technology to Oklahoma: InVita’s Automated iReferral® interoperability platform.
Across the state, hospitals are required by the Center for Medicare Services to make a call to LifeShare to evaluate organ and tissue potential when patients are near end of life. Each patient is evaluated during that phone call, and it is determined if a potential donation opportunity exists at the time of the patient’s death. Out of every 100 referrals, approximately three patients may meet the criteria to be a donor hero, and each phone call with hospital staff can take 20 minutes or longer. Because of this, it is vital that hospitals have the tools to make this process as efficient as possible.

Uncharted Waters Bring New Beginnings
Cruising through the Atlantic and enjoying a tropical vacation was all Mitch Mitchell, of Oklahoma City, had been craving. He knew the cruise would be the relaxing reprieve he needed. While he was enjoying his cruise, his world flipped upside down when he unexpectedly experienced swelling in his legs. After consulting a medical professional on the ship, he was referred to a nephrologist, a doctor who specializes in treating kidneys as soon as he made it back to dry land.

Breathing In and Out -- The Breath of Life
Oklahoma Woman celebrates Sixteen Years as Lung Recipient
Oklahoma City (June 21, 2023) — Many organ recipients often feel undeserving when they reflect on receiving the gift of life. When Allie Hall, of Oklahoma City, feels this way, she submerges herself in water. Whether it be a bathtub or pool, she takes a plunge under the water and when she comes up, she focuses on the sound of her breath and the tune of her heartbeat.
Hearing her own breath amplified while her ears are submerged in the water and the ability to breathe freely is very important to Allie, and perhaps remembered more so than others, because she has Cystic Fibrosis and received a double lung transplant in June of 2007. Her breath is a reminder that she was chosen to receive a priceless gift – the gift of life. Her story wasn’t over yet, and thanks to a heroic organ donor – she received new lungs and is grateful to witness every day she’s been given.

Saving Lives Across State Lines
Jeff Blumenthal, of Oklahoma City, a financial advisor of 30 years, has always had the little red heart on his driver’s license to be an organ and tissue donor. He had never put much thought into being a donor, but knew it was a noble thing to do. In 2021, everything changed when he donated his kidney and became a living donor.
Jeff knew that his second cousin, Margaret, would eventually need a transplant after living life with Polycystic Kidney Disease. He never expected to be the donor himself. When Jeff saw her at a family celebration, he asked how her health was and she informed him that her kidneys were failing. Jeff asked her to give him a call when she was listed for a transplant.
About one year later, Jeff learned Margaret needed a kidney. He registered with the transplant center and began the process, which took just over a year. During the process, he became apprehensive and wondered if he should think about it more before fully committing to the procedure. When he sought guidance from his rabbi, Jeff was told, “when you have the chance to save a life, you do it.” After hearing those words, his apprehension was cleared, and he knew he was doing the right thing.

Becoming Fearless
Like most toddlers, two-year-old Baylor Andrews, of Oklahoma City was full of life. She liked to sing, dance, and enjoy time with her family while she flaunted her bold personality.
Early in 2017, Baylor’s parents, Bryant and Alyssa, noticed Baylor had a loss of appetite. Like a growing toddler, she had been eating non-stop, and started to only eat a few bites each meal, and eventually did not want to eat at all. Once she refused to drink milk, her parents knew they were dealing with more than just a picky toddler.

Amanda Wright is Wishfully Waiting
During the summer of 2016, Amanda Wright of Lufkin, TX was living a bright and happy life. She was expecting a promotion at work and, even though she worked a lot, she also prioritized her social life. She was very active and enjoyed spending time with her niece and nephews.
Everything was about to change, though, when she was diagnosed with cirrhosis at just 30 years old. After living with cirrhosis for four years, anesthesia during a minor surgery in 2020 triggered liver failure, inevitably putting her on the national transplant waiting list.

LifeShare Conducts First-Time Uncrewed Aerial Transport of Organs
Groundbreaking Technology Aims to Improve Transport of Donated Organs and Tissues by use of Drones in Rural Areas to Overcome Patient Inequities.
An uncrewed aerial transport system will move donated human organs across three cities today to prove it could be the future of organ donation and transplantation. LifeShare is conducting groundbreaking research in hopes of revolutionizing transport in the organ donation process. An uncrewed aerial transport system will achieve an important milestone: the farthest distance donated organs have been transported by an uncrewed aerial system.
LifeShare, the organization in the state responsible for organ and tissue donation, has partnered with the Matador Uncrewed Aerial System (UAS) Consortium, co-developed by Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTU HSC) and 2THEDGE, LLC., to conduct a beyond visual line-of-sight (BVLOS) uncrewed aerial transport (UAS) to test the ability to successfully move organs and blood between Lubbock, Oklahoma City and San Antonio.
The test is taking place Tuesday, November 15th at Will Rogers Airport, the media is invited to attend.
WHAT: First-Time Uncrewed Aerial Transport of Organs (Take-Off)
WHERE: Atlantic Aviation - 6401 S Portland Avenue, Oklahoma City, OK 73159
WHEN: Tuesday, November 15 at 11:40 AM
PHOTOS: There will be several opportunities for great photos and videos at this event.
INTERVIEWS: LifeShare Leadership will be available for interviews.
This is the first time that donated organs were transported this far of a distance by an aerial system that was operated using robotic technology. The Optionally Piloted Aircraft (OPA) will be transporting a donated human liver, kidney, and pancreas between the three cities. Although there is a pilot on board per FAA regulations, the plane will be flown entirely by technology onboard. The organs were donated for clinical research and were not transplanted following the fight demonstration. MORE INFORMATION

Woman’s Sight Restored after Corneal Transplant LifeShare Celebrates National Donate Life Month
As Jillian Sulley of Broken Arrow, Okla., began the drive back to college to take her final exams, she suddenly noticed the only thing she could see out of her left eye was a white haze. Terrified, she called her mom who instructed her to finish her final exams and that she would schedule an appointment with an eye doctor when she returned. When they went to the appointment, the doctor examined her eyes and then asked the family to meet him in his office.
Jillian and her mother were overwhelmed with fear as they walked into his office. The doctor told Jillian that in his entire practice, he had never seen Fuchs’ Dystrophy and Keratoconus together in someone her age. To treat her diseased corneas, he recommended an emergency corneal transplant in her left eye and immediately placed her on the waiting list.

Young Woman Saves Lives Through Donation after Apartment Fire
Donna Burrell is a hero. She was a mother, daughter and sister. She enjoyed going to church, writing stories and even aspired to write a novel about her life.
Her family remembers her huge smile, larger than life sense of humor and her fierce love for her sons. Donna’s mother and sisters remember her joyful spirit at a young age in a fairy-tale like memory of going to the park to catch fireflies and have a picnic. That joyful spirit carried on with her into adult life – and she made a beautiful and fun life for her family.
