LIFESHARE HAS THIRD CONSECUTIVE RECORD BREAKING YEAR
443 LIVES SAVED BY OKLAHOMANS IN 2016
For the third consecutive year, LifeShare set records on all three key metrics of organ donors recovered, organs transplanted and tissue donors recovered. In 2016, LifeShare surpassed its previous record and coordinated the donation of lifesaving organs from 180 donors whose generous gifts resulted in 485 organs transplanted.
LifeShare is the federally designated organ procurement organization in the state of Oklahoma and is responsible for organ and tissue donation statewide.
In 2015, LifeShare recovered 174 organ donors, passing the organization’s all-time high record of 141 donors set in 2014.
“We are proud of the work LifeShare has done this past year to help save lives,” explained Jeffrey Orlowski, President and Chief Executive Officer for LifeShare. “For the third consecutive year, we have set organizational records across the board, which is a result of the focus and commitment from the entire LifeShare team including staff, leadership, volunteers and the efforts of the Oklahoma medical community.”
Last year, LifeShare also recovered tissue from 725 donors, which may benefit more than 36,000 people through bone donations to improve mobility, skin donations to heal burn patients, cornea donations to restore sight and heart valve donations to repair life-threatening defects.
“Most importantly, we are thankful for the incredible support and generosity of Oklahomans, without which our lifesaving work would not be possible,” explains Orlowski. “We encourage all Oklahomans to continue registering to be organ, eye and tissue donors so more lives can be saved.
In the 2016 record breaking year, more than 443 lives were saved through organ and tissue donation. The need for transplant is growing, and there are still approximately 800 Oklahomans currently waiting for a lifesaving transplant.
