LARRY ELLIOTT, LIVER RECIPIENT & TRANSPLANT GAME PARTICIPANT
Seven years ago, Larry Elliott, of Oklahoma City, Okla., had strange turn of fate which caused him to wait for a call that would give him another chance at life.
Elliott received a new liver in 2009 that changed the way he lived.
Elliott is now preparing to represent the state of Oklahoma in the 2016 Transplant Games of America in Cleveland, Ohio.
The Transplant Games of America is a multi-sport festival event for individuals who have undergone lifesaving transplant surgeries. Events are open to living donors, transplant recipients, and organ donor families. It exists to raise awareness for the need for organ, eye and tissue donation while celebrating the lives of organ donors and recipients.
“The competition is intense, but mostly I enjoy going to the Transplant games to hear people’s stories of transplantation,” Elliott explained.
Elliott will travel with Team Oklahoma, a team of 50, to represent the state of Oklahoma as well as the need for more organ, eye and tissue donors. Members of Team Oklahoma will participate in events such as a 5K, badminton, bowling, darts, cycling and volleyball.
This year, Elliott is planning on being a part of as many events as he can, including bowling singles, doubles and mixed as well as darts.
“LifeShare is happy to support Team Oklahoma and the Transplant Games,” said Jeff Orlowski, President and Chief Executive Officer of LifeShare. “Seeing these participants’ live healthy, active lives helps us further our mission to save more lives through organ donation.”
The transplant games will take place in June in Cleveland, Ohio.
