Young Woman Saves Lives Through Donation after Apartment Fire
LifeShare Celebrates National Donate Life Month

Donna Burrell is a hero. She was a mother, daughter and sister. She enjoyed going to church, writing stories and even aspired to write a novel about her life.
Her family remembers her huge smile, larger than life sense of humor and her fierce love for her sons. Donna’s mother and sisters remember her joyful spirit at a young age in a fairy-tale like memory of going to the park to catch fireflies and have a picnic. That joyful spirit carried on with her into adult life – and she made a beautiful and fun life for her family.
In 2016, her apartment in Oklahoma City caught fire. Her fiancé Phillip, Donna and two of her sons escaped from the fire. She ran back into the burning building in an attempt to save her son Zeus who was eventually rescued by firefighters.
Donna fiercely loved her family, and died from injuries she sustained while trying to save her son from the burning apartment. She and her team of doctors fought for her life at the hospital for two days, and after all measures had been exhausted she was pronounced brain dead. Her family was approached about Donna becoming an organ donor – which was no surprise to them because of her generous spirit and love for others.
Through donation, Donna was able to save six lives.
April is National Donate Life Month. Across the United States, more than 110,000 individuals wait for an organ transplant to save their life. Thousands more are in need of tissue and corneal transplants to restore mobility and sight. Without the generous gift of more than 30,000 donors in the United States each year, many would still be waiting for a lifesaving gift.
LifeShare is honoring those who have given the gift of life by celebrating National Donate Life Month. You can give the gift of life by registering to be an organ, eye and tissue donor at LifeShareRegistry.org.
