Amanda Wright is Wishfully Waiting
During the summer of 2016, Amanda Wright of Lufkin, TX, was living a bright and happy life. She was expecting a promotion at work and, even though she worked a lot, she also prioritized her social life. She was very active and enjoyed spending time with her niece and nephews.
Everything was about to change, though, when she was diagnosed with cirrhosis at just 30 years old. After living with cirrhosis for four years, anesthesia during a minor surgery in 2020 triggered liver failure, inevitably putting her on the national transplant waiting list. The minor surgery caused Amanda’s legs and lower abdomen to swell. She didn’t think much of it because she believed it was a side effect from the surgery. A month later, though, the swelling was still prominent, so she made an emergency appointment with her doctor and received her diagnosis. |
Amanda believed her life was over after receiving her diagnosis. She didn’t understand why this was happening to her. She said, ‘scared doesn’t even begin to describe how I was feeling.’
Leading up to finding out she needed a transplant, she was living her ‘best life.’ Three years later, she is trying to live her life to the fullest while she is waiting for that transplant.
Her family and friends were willing to donate but none of them were medically able for various reasons. These same family and friends are always worried for her and offer endless love and support.
She hopes her phone will ring soon with the news of a viable liver meant for her. Until then, she will continue wishfully waiting.
April is National Donate Life Month. Across the United States, more than 106,000 individuals wait for an organ transplant to save their life. Thousands more need tissue and corneal transplants to restore mobility and sight. Without the generous gift of more than 20,000 donors in the United States each year, many would still be waiting for a lifesaving gift.
LifeShare is honoring those who have given the gift of life by celebrating National Donate Life Month. You can give the gift of life by registering to be an organ, eye and tissue donor at LifeShareRegistry.org.
