TEEN WHO DIED AFTER MOORE CRASH SAVES LIVES THROUGH ORGAN DONATION
Six months later, the community of Moore is still in mourning after six teens on a cross country run were struck by a vehicle driven nearly 80 miles an hour in a school zone last February. Kolby Crum, age 18 of Moore, was one of three who lost their lives. The community of Moore now learns Kolby’s legacy lives on in others through organ donation.
According to his family, Kolby always cared about others. He was never into sports but wanted to be on a team and joined cross country. He liked it – and worked hard to excel. Kolby finished in the top 2 percent of athletes in the 2019 season. Not only did he work hard – he also ran alongside others to encourage them.

LIFESHARE OF OKLAHOMA USES TECHNOLOGY TO TRACK ORGAN DELIVERY
PROTECTING PRECIOUS GIFTS
In a time where technology is king, LifeShare of Oklahoma has proactively partnered with a technology company to automate tracking donated organs as they are being delivered to transplant teams waiting to save a precious life.
LifeShare is the federally designated organ procurement organization (OPO) in the state of Oklahoma and is responsible for organ and tissue donation statewide.
A few years back, Dr. Randall Sung, who is a Professor of Surgery and Surgical Director of Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation at Michigan Medicine, posed a good question, “If I can see my pizza being delivered, why can’t we have the same technology to track delivery of organs?” This stuck with and inspired someone at LifeShare to make this a reality for their transplant center partners.

EVAN SMARTT, A LOVER AND A GIVER OF LIFE - Teen donates organs, saves four lives; restores sight to two others
Earlier this year, staff, family and friends lined the hallways of a local hospital to honor Evan Smartt, a teenager of Edmond, Okla., who made a heroic decision to save lives as an organ and tissue donor.
The honor walk, as it’s called, takes place in a pause between death and life; after brain death has been declared and before organs are recovered to save another’s life. It is a powerful act of community. This solemn and sacred walk to the operating room honors the donor’s final act of heroism. It also gives hope to a grieving family in a moment of fathomless loss.

SHARING LIFE AND A LIVER
LIFESHARE CELEBRATES NATIONAL DONATE LIFE MONTH
David Wheelis, of Oklahoma City, wakes up grateful everyday he is alive. His life is forever changed thanks to his girlfriend – who saved his life five years ago.
In 2010, David learned he had a rare liver disease. At first, he had anxiety and a fear of the unknown – not fully knowing what would happen. After receiving his diagnosis, he knew he would eventually need a transplant, so he began to accept his diagnosis and eventual treatment.
He worked on himself to attempt to delay the disease, such as leading a healthy lifestyle by watching what he was eating and exercising. He kept his faith that if he took care of the little things like his day to day tasks, the big things would take care of themselves.

"PISTOL ANNIE" BY ABBEY AHERN
LifeShare Celebrates National Donate Life Month
This is the story of an incredible little girl named Annie Ahern. I’m Abbey, Annie’s mom, and Robert is her dad. Annie has two big sisters, Dylan and Harper Lou. Robert and I have known from the beginning of our marriage that we both wanted a large family.
When we found out we were pregnant with our third child we were overjoyed. This pregnancy was so different than the previous two because the kids were so much more involved. Dylan was 4 now, so she really understood what was happening. She was getting a new baby! She told us of all the ways she was excited to help with her new sibling. Harper was only 2, but she fed off of her big sister’s excitement. She tickled and kissed my growing belly every chance she could.

WOMEN'S SIGHT RESTORED AFTER CORNEAL TRANSPLANT
LifeShare Celebrates National Donate Life Month
As Jillian Sulley of Oklahoma City, Okla., began the drive back to college to take her final exams, she suddenly noticed the only thing she could see out of her left eye was a white haze. Terrified, she called her mom who instructed her to finish her final exams and that she would schedule an appointment with an eye doctor when she returned. When they went to the appointment, the doctor examined her eyes and then asked the family to meet him in his office.
Jillian and her mother were overwhelmed with fear as they walked into his office. The doctor told Jillian that in his entire practice, he had never seen Fuchs’ Dystrophy and Kerataconus together in someone her age. To treat her diseased corneas, he recommended an emergency corneal transplant in her left eye and immediately placed her on the waiting list.

FATHER AND SON SHARE INSEPARABLE BOND
CELEBRATE NATIONAL DONATE LIFE MONTH BY REGISTERING TO BE AN ORGAN DONOR
A father, George Schroeder, of Norman, shares an inseparable bond with his now eight year old son, Christopher. Together, they watch sports and play basketball or wrestle one another to the floor.
In 2009 when Christopher was born with a heart condition, the doctors originally thought he would just need a series of three surgeries to repair his heart. However, they learned Christopher would need a heart transplant to survive. At just seven weeks old, he received a new heart from a selfless and generous donor – saving his life.
Shortly after the procedure, Christopher’s kidneys failed. Doctors and medical staff worked tirelessly to bring him back to the best health possible, while he still relied on dialysis to keep his kidneys functioning.

SAM'S FINAL TOUCHDOWN - LIFESHARE HONORS DONOR WHO GAVE THE GIFT OF LIFE
Over the loud speakers during his weekly football games, spectators would hear praises of Sam Akin without a doubt. “Touchdown by #20 Sam Akin, running back for the Plainsmen”, or “55 yard run by Sam Akin”.
Sam Akin from Enid, Okla., had a love for life like no one else – and lived every day to the fullest. He loved to be outside and would often ride his scooter or skateboard until the sun went down – but nothing made Sam happier than football.
Sam didn’t just enjoy football – he lived it and he was good at it, too. His dream was go to on and play football for the OU Sooners and eventually to the NFL.
When he first attended Summer Pride practice at the high school in 2016, the coaches were excited to see Sam’s work ethic and ability. The coaches started talking to his dad about how excited they were that Sam would be playing for them soon. However, they didn’t realize at that time, Sam was only in 6th grade and would have another year before joining the Plainsmen.

COMING UP FOR AIR: OKLAHOMA WOMAN WAITING FOR LUNG TRANSPLANT
LifeShare Encourages all Oklahomans to Register as Donors
Raychel Baker, of Oklahoma City, has a lot of faith.
She is just one of the nearly 700 Oklahomans who woke up this morning hopeful today would be the day she receives a call that would change her life forever.
At a young age, she was diagnosed with a rare Idiopathic Lung Disease for which there is no cure. The disease manifests itself as a slow deterioration or scarring of the lung tissue.
As a child, Raychel played sports and was very athletic. During basketball season when she was 10 years old, she noticed she had a lingering cough that she could not get rid of. She saw her doctor, who initially diagnosed her with bronchitis. After medication and rest, the doctors determined it wasn’t bronchitis, and continually tested her for other infections or diseases. Her lungs were functioning at 40 percent, and stayed stable most of her teenage years.

LIFESHARE TO CELEBRATE NATIONAL DONATE LIFE MONTH
ENCOURAGES OKLAHOMANS TO REGISTER AS DONORS
Every April, LifeShare of Oklahoma celebrates National Donate Life Month, focusing national attention on every individual’s power to make life possible by registering their decision to be an organ, eye and tissue donor.
To help illustrate the message of donation, Donate Life America creates unique artwork for each National Donate Life Month. The 2018 National Donate Life Month (NDLM) art was inspired by the image of a rainbow, and Maya Angelou’s quote, “Be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud.”
Often following a storm, the presence of a rainbow provides optimism and motivates us to endure through dark times. Organ, eye and tissue donation is the bridge of comfort and hope between one family’s mourning and another’s healing — turning tragedy into renewed life. The Donate Life rainbow in the National Donate Life Month artwork rises from stormy clouds, recognizing that it takes both rain and light to create the gift of a rainbow.

DENTIST'S SIGHT RESTORED AFTER CORNEAL TRANSPLANT
Francis Moore, of Norman, Okla., began his budding career in dentistry at age 25. Just two years later, he began to lose his vision and could only see with one eye. Disappointed in his vision and worried about his career, he visited an ophthalmologist and was later diagnosed with an eye condition that could only be cured by a cornea transplant.
At just 27 years old, Moore was fearful about his future as a dentist. He would doubt himself and his profession wondering who would want to have dental procedures completed by a one-eyed dentist.

ULTIMATE ACT OF KINDNESS - Oklahoma Woman Donates Kidney to her Best Friend
The act of giving without expecting something in return is the true definition of kindness. One Oklahoma woman demonstrated the true definition of kindness and became her best friend’s hero.
Alexa Kehl, of Moore, Okla., was diagnosed with diabetes when she was just nine years old. Several years later, both of her kidneys were shutting down and working at a mere 12 percent. She was put on dialysis, and the strict diet it includes. A year later, Alexa’s mom graciously donated a kidney to save her daughter’s life.

NOT YOUR AVERAGE 13-YEAR-OLD
Yukon Girl Waits for Lifesaving Transplant
Boxes filled with dialysis equipment flood the home of 13-year-old Allison Kuc, of Yukon, Okla., who is waiting on a lifesaving transplant. Eight hours a night, Allison is connected to a machine which does the work of her kidneys. Over the past three years, Allison has had several changes – and being diagnosed with kidney failure is one of them.
In the spring of 2014, Allison and her family had moved to their new home in Yukon. As an active pre-teen, she enjoyed playing soccer, riding her bike and participating in activities that other girls her age enjoyed doing. She was in fourth grade at the time, and took her shoes off when she got home from school. She put her feet up on her mom’s lap when she noticed her feet were swollen. The week before, she had swelling around her eyes, and her mother Pam attributed it to allergies in a new environment.

She was leery of his suggested mammogram, as her insurance had not paid for one in the past. Still unsure, Carrieann decided she could not afford to ignore the suggestion and scheduled the screening.

FAMILY, FRIENDS WALK OKLAHOMA CITY MEMORIAL MARATHON TO HONOR TEEN WHO DONATED HIS ORGANS TO LOCAL MAN
Two families bonded together by the heart of a teenage baseball player carry on Brendon McLarty’s legacy by embracing what he cared about.
Friends and family of the teen will walk in the Oklahoma City Memorial marathon this year, not only remembering the lives lost in the 1995 bombing, but also to celebrate the life of a young organ donor who passed away in 2012. The recipient of his heart will cheer them on from afar.
Brendon McLarty was an all-American 16 year old boy who had a passion for sports. He was a Perry Maroon through and through, and enjoyed playing football and baseball for Perry High School. He played sports with determination, passion and focus – and inspired his fellow teammates to play the best they could.
“He was very selfless in a way that’s hard to articulate,” said Jennifer Blair, Brendon’s aunt. “He appreciated the small things in life. He lived life and touched so many people’s lives in 16 years, and was able to do that again when he died.”
Brendon died in 2012 after a fatal asthma attack. When he got his driver’s license, he had signed up to be an organ donor.

82-YEAR OLD ORGAN DONOR PROVES THAT AGE IS NO BARRIER TO GIVING THE GIFT OF LIFE
Paul Castner gave the gift of life at age 82 so that someone else could live. In turn, he also gave his family the gift of healing.
When many don’t think they have much left to give after living a long and healthy life, Castner of Mangum, Okla., donated his organs.
“Organ donation doesn’t have a specific face. I never thought my 82-year old father would be a face of organ donation,” Eric Castner said.
April is National Donate Life Month, and LifeShare is celebrating the donors who selflessly give the gift of life. The federally designated organ procurement organization is responsible for organ and tissue donation statewide.
“We often hear that people think they are too old to be an organ donor, but Paul Castner’s story proves that any person at any age can give the gift of life,” said Jeff Orlowski, president and CEO of LifeShare. “Paul is the second oldest donor in the state of Oklahoma.”

HEART TRANSPLANTS SAVE LIVES OF FATHER AND DAUGHTER
April is National Donate Life Month, and LifeShare is celebrating those who have given the gift of life as well as those who have received that gift. The Morrison family, of Roff, Okla., has been deeply impacted by the generous gift of donation and transplantation after both a father and daughter were in need of a new heart.
Paul Morrison and his family moved to Roff, Okla., for ranching opportunities. During the time he and his family were moving, Paul began feeling sick, and after a series of tests, the doctors realized his heart was failing. His health continued to decline, and he was put on the transplant waiting list. He began feeling better, and was offered a heart in 2004, but turned it down because he thought he was recovering.
